Leon M. Hernandez, San Antonio Miguel Hernandez Chapter Dies

American GI Forum of Texas, Inc. Report: SAN ANTONIO, TX– Leon M. Hernandez, 86 of San Antonio passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2014. He was born April 11, 1928 in Corpus Christi, TX to Marcus and Manuela (Salinas) Hernandez. He was awarded a BA in Business Administration from UT Austin in 1952. A Veteran of the Korean War, he served as 1st LT in the U.S. Army and awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was a long-time member of the American GI Forum Miguel Hernandez Chapter in San Antonio. He was also a member of the American Legion. Leon, a respected leader had a strong belief in educational opportunities for Hispanics. 

Dedicated to LULAC over 70 years, he was involved with Scholarship Funding for Council #2 serving as President and the founding of Council #602 and recognized as 'Outstanding Man of the Year'. Instrumental in establishing Project SER, Leon also had strong ties to Civic and political organizations:Fiesta Commission, Paracutin Civic Educational Foundation, G.I. Forum, American Legion and served as Democratic Precinct Chairman.

Leon is survived by his wife, Brenda L. Hernandez; daughter, Leandra Hernandez; son, Carl Walker; brother, Richard L. Hernandez, his wife, Virginia and nieces and nephews.  Graveside Service with Military Honors were conducted on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 9:45am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. The American GI Forum of Texas, Inc. Board of Directors and members are sadden at the news and extend condolences to the Hernandez family. May he rest in peace.
